Deciphering the significance of a win like Louisville's toppling of West Virginia in 2006, or the Cards' victory in the Orange Bowl two months later isn't exactly a tall task. Pinpointing the gravity of prevailing in a game which will end up being little more than a scrolling score at the bottom of the television to 95% of the sports world is a bit more difficult.
A win by Louisville over Kentucky on Sunday won't make anywhere near the national splash the two victories mentioned above did. No one at USA Today is going to be writing about the...

Red golf shirt and mandals?? Check.
Opposing team's fans trolling the message boards while simultaneously struggling with the concept of satire? Check.
But it's not football season around here until we've talked cocktails. It is officially Cocktail Thursday.
Commenter dawgengineer asked that it be moved up to Wednesday , and I can't say I blame him. Wednesday is a perfectly good day for kicking back with a cocktail. Unfortunately, I didn't notice his request until it was too late. So Cocktail...

All the talk, all the predictions, all the work and game planning leads every program to this moment. The first game of the season. Every team across this country of ours starts undefeated, their hopes yet to be grounded in harsh reality. It's a moment prior to kickoff where the faithful in Ypsilanti, Michigan dream their Eastern Michigan Eagles just may be able to finish with a winning record.
It's the belief that Army might finally turn it around and that they'll get their chance against Temple, who themselves feel that this is the season they...

Position Preview: Defensive Ends

If we had a non-special teams weakness last season, it would have to be the defensive ends. Russell Brorsen and John Larson are fine players, sure, and they did their role, but the pass rush always had to come from the middle and James McClinton. Brorsen and Larson were virtually non-existent in rushing the passer. And so, Mangino has made it a priority to recruit some speed-rushers, people who can actually get the quarterback on hia ass.
So, I think this position will be much improved this season. Not as good as it will be next year, when the current...

Everything up until now has been prelude. If the consensus is correct, the teams above will be the ones with the best shot at taking premier conference championships -- I know there aren't any ACC teams; I said premier -- or a shot at shaking up the teams that would take one of the top prizes.
Five Saturdays, with four weeks between them, deciding everything. The Final Month.
THE FIRST WEEK (11/7-8) The weekday slate features a decent enough WAC game, when darkhorse contender Nevada goes to Fresno State in a match-up scheduled for...

UNC has released a quick guide for football fans dealing with game day logistics. The primary news is parking related - with the Bell Tower and Boshamer lots closed, the Nash (by the water tower) and Mason Farm lots have been converted to Rams Club parking. Manning is still the recommended tailgating spot, and as always, there are shuttles from various points around town.

We’ll never shy away from taking a shot at Oklahoma State here at the Machine but I don’t know that we’ve ever massed an onslaught like SI.com’s Stewart Mandell. In his College Football Mailbag Mandell’s response to a question from an Oklahoma State fan as to why the Cowboys aren’t getting any love as an up-and-comer in 2008 was that Mike Gundy is a clown, the Cowboys are horrible on defense and Mike Gundy is a clown.
Why is it that the media is practically ignoring Oklahoma State ? This team was...

Because it's tough to come up with a lot of content that's not covered elsewhere until the Cougs actually play a game, Grady and I decided we would tackle one burning question surrounding the team each day until kickoff on Saturday.
On to part two of our series! (You can find part one here .)
What player, other than Gary Rogers, is most key to the Cougs' offensive success this year?
Grady: At the risk of choosing the obvious answer, I have to go with Brandon Gibson . The reason being that Gibson, as the most talented player on the offensive...

Breaking down the Canes defense for Thursday night's opener at home vs. Charleston Southern:
DE - Starters Eric Moncur and Allen Bailey are hurt and out. Backup pass-rusher Courtney Harris is out for the year. And Adewale Ojomo is suspended for one game. Wow. That is a huge hit. Hopefully, the Canes will get Moncur and Bailey back for week 2 vs. Florida along with Ojomo. In the meantime, true freshmen Marcus Robinson, Gavin Hardin and Andrew Smith and sophomore Steve Wesley have to step up. Of those four, I have the most hope for Robinson...

Twas the night before Kickoff, OSU versus Trees
Not a creature was stirring, not even the Beavs. The grill tongs were hung by the barby with care, In hopes that fine meats soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of touchdowns danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just uh...we'll just say...it's time for a nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like Duck Dodgers (of the 23rd...

Projected Starters: Mike Turkovich (LT), Eric Olsen (LG), Dan Wenger (C), Chris Stewart (RG), Sam Young (RT)
Backup(s): Paul Duncan, Thomas Bemenderfer, Trevor Robinson, Taylor Dever, Matt Romine
2008 Outlook: The Irish offensive line are looking to improve after a disastrous 2007 season in which the Irish were almost dead last in every statistical category. Some of it you could blame on experience and youth, as they started four new starters, but the problem lied in the development of the unit...

We're now under 70 hours until the 2008 Nebraska football season kicks off...and it's time to start getting serious. People have been throwing out wild predictions... 4 wins, 9 wins, win 'em all, just play hard.
But what are we really going to see in 2008?
That's a very good question. On offense, we've got a few ideas. We know that Joe Ganz can throw the ball all over the place. Usually it's caught by his receivers, but unfortunately, a few too many times by the defense. We know that Marlon Lucky can catch the ball out...
